Decaf Coffee Before Bed: Will It Affect Your Sleep?
For most adults, a cup of decaf coffee before bed is less likely to disturb sleep than regular coffee. But decaf is not completely caffeine free. If you are particularly sensitive to caffeine, even a small amount may matter. Your evening routine, the size of your drink and what you have consumed earlier in the day can matter too.
There is a difference between a comforting evening coffee and turning bedtime into a six-hour debate with your own brain. Here’s how to enjoy the first without inviting the second.
How much caffeine is in decaf coffee?
The US Food and Drug Administration gives a typical range of 2 to 15 mg of caffeine for an 8 fluid ounce cup of decaffeinated coffee. Regular coffee usually contains substantially more, although amounts vary by beans, serving size and brewing method.
A large cafetiere, a double decaf espresso and a little supermarket cup are different drinks. The word ‘decaf’ on the bag gives you a broad indication, not a laboratory measurement of the finished cup.
Why does regular coffee interfere with sleep?
Caffeine blocks the action of adenosine, one of the substances associated with feeling sleepy. Its effects can last for several hours, with considerable variation between individuals. Studies of caffeine taken before bedtime have found that evening doses can disturb sleep, even when a person does not feel especially alert. A frequently cited controlled study is Drake and colleagues’ investigation of caffeine taken 0, 3 and 6 hours before bedtime.
The NHS recommends avoiding caffeine close to bedtime as part of sensible sleep habits. Its sleep guidance also covers regular routines, light, exercise and other factors that can influence sleep.
Does drinking decaf before bed help you sleep?
Decaf contains considerably less caffeine and is therefore a sensible alternative to regular coffee for someone trying to reduce evening caffeine. It is not a sleep treatment. A hot drink may feel relaxing because of routine, comfort and familiarity, but it would be misleading to claim that decaf itself makes people sleep better.
What if you are very sensitive to caffeine?
Some people notice palpitations, restlessness or difficulty sleeping after comparatively small doses. If that sounds familiar, make your last coffee earlier in the evening or switch to a drink naturally free from caffeine. Keep a short note of drink times, sleep onset and other factors over several evenings if you want to see whether timing makes a difference for you.
If you have persistent sleep difficulties, seek advice from a suitable healthcare professional. Coffee sellers, however entertaining, cannot diagnose insomnia.
What about decaf tea and herbal tea?
Decaffeinated black tea can still contain some caffeine. A pure peppermint or rooibos infusion contains no caffeine naturally, provided it does not include caffeinated tea or other caffeine-containing ingredients. Check the ingredient list on blends. Browse our herbal and fruit infusions if zero caffeine is your priority.
How to choose a good evening decaf
- Choose flavour first: a smooth coffee you enjoy is easier to make part of an evening routine
- Watch the serving size: more cups can add up even when each contains little caffeine
- Use the right grind: fine ground, filter and whole beans serve different brewing equipment
- Keep the routine calm: late-night work, bright screens and stress can matter more than one small decaf
Consider Luxe Organic Honduran decaf or explore the full decaf coffee range. For anyone who needs absolutely no caffeine, a naturally caffeine-free infusion is the more certain option.
